A very Vegas New Year’s Eve with Oscar Goodman
It is New Year’s Even in downtown Las Vegas and everything about this scene is set at maximum volume. High above, on the multimillion-dollar Fremont Street Experience canopy, a splash of color accompanies the pulsating Queen anthem, “We Will Rock You/We Are the Champions.” A crowd estimated at 30,000 seems bent on redefining “revelry.” It is a staggering throng in every respect, and in the midst of the chaos a onetime mob attorney knifes through the real-time mob, managing to ... Frank Mir is Vegas’ own action hero
The last UFC of the year lived up to its name of “The Ultimate 2008” as the crowd of 14,103 witnessed two belts change hands and saw Quinton “Rampage” Jackson avenge his losses. Jackson had previously suffered two losses when he met with fellow light heavyweight Wanderlei Silva in the Pride organization. Jackson endured some personal problems since his recent loss to Forrest Griffin, but last night he was able to put his demons aside and conquer Silva in a ... Read more...

Steve Wynn’s multi-billion dollar baby, Encore, is revealed
In the theater rotunda that forms the borderlands between Wynn and Encore, red butterflies decorated in 14 colors of hand-applied Swarovski crystals float on the ceiling overhead. They are an amuse-bouche that teases the casino and hotel beyond – the first taste of the recurring themes of butterflies and crimson that populate much of the property that follows. Beyond the Weekly Encore Las Vegas Steve Wynn’s Encore, his $2.3 billion dollar baby, opens to the public tonight at 8 p.m. ... Read more...

Ultimate Fighter stages finale fight at the Pearl
This season of The Ultimate Fighter proved to be one of the most entertaining, thanks in large part to the antics outside of the octagon and a few liberal applications of bodily fluids. Viewers of the intense fighting show are used to seeing blood and sweat fly in every direction, but this year the fighters threw urine and other male excretions into the mix when they used them in disgusting pranks in The Ultimate Fighter house. Season eight had 32 ... Read more...

Mirage volcano has fiery rebirth
After months of the Mirage’s volcano lying dormant, the hotel and casino reignited the fiery icon in a public ceremony, showcasing a new look and a new sound. Camping out for computers on Thanksgiving Day
While heading to the grocery store for some last minute items that inevitably didn’t make the Thanksgiving dinner shopping list, I stumbled upon an unusual Thanksgiving tradition. Passing Best Buy, I saw a city of tents set up inside a barricaded area around the front of the store. Upon closer inspection, I realized this wasn’t a display of camping gear for sale; it was a line of enthusiastic shoppers eagerly awaiting the opening of the doors for Black Friday shopping ... On the trail of “America’s worst governor”
Las Vegas Weekly has been committed to documenting the failures of Governor Jim Gibbons for a long time. We’ve reported on the special designation that lowered the annual property tax on his 40 acres in Elko County from $5,000 to $15. We’ve quizzed you on the salacious language in Dawn Gibbons’ now very public divorce motion. We’ve compared Gibbons’ May 2007 approval rating to President Bush’s – 29 percent versus 34 percent – and discussed the FBI inquiry into the ... Read more...

A generation later, a look back at the election of 2008
It is a generation beyond the administration of President Barack Obama. The questioner is a grade-schooler studying U.S. history. He wants answers to questions not found in the official, recorded account of American politics. He starts asking … “You saw him, didn’t you?” “Yes, when he campaigned in 2008, the first time. I heard him speak a few times during that campaign.” “Where?” “Once in a ballroom at the Paris hotel in Las Vegas, on what we called, ‘The Strip,’ ... Read more...
