Ditch the dress and break a sweat

Ditch the heels, the mini-dress that might actually be a shirt, those stifling collars and non-sneaker shoes. If you’ve ever wished you could hit a Strip hotspot in your sweats, January 6 is the night – the dress code at Pure is strictly sweatsuits. The birthday celebration for beloved DJs Ikon and Hollywood will feature the afro-rocking Hollywood hip-hoppers LMFAO, performing as part of Pure’s Don’t Sweat the Sweatsuit party and undoubtedly including their popular MySpace hit “I’m in Miami, ... An unexpected love affair on NYE

At 2:30 p.m. on Jan 1, 2009, fake eyelashes blurred my vision as my eyes fluttered open every few seconds, just long enough to pick a path through the Palms Casino Resort towards self parking. I’d never been awake this long in my life, and after two days without leaving the Palms, I felt like I’d known this place my whole life. Stumbling through the daylight in oversized gorilla slippers, I felt a rosy blush as I replayed 24 hours ... Read more...

Celebs are just like us! (when it comes to New Year’s resolutions)

We rarely resolve to do anything, but once a year for about a week resolutions are on everybody’s lips. As the year ticks down to December 31, the country takes stock on a micro level of what it has and hasn’t accomplished in the proceeding 364 days. We then pick an area that could use some improvement and move forward with a mission in mind. And here’s the shocker – celebrities do too. Paul Oakenfold, resident DJ and creator of ... Read more...

So long, 2008. Hello, 2009.

A New Year’s Eve crowd of about 290,000 visitors packed Las Vegas into the early morning, ushering in a new year and saying goodbye to 12 months that some hoped to forget. The alcohol flowed on a crowded night packed with fireworks, motorcycle stunts and a sprinkling of arrests, although police said no major problems were reported. Four adults stood huddled at the entrance of Harrah’s, boisterously laughing, almost as if they had just pulled off an “Oceans 11”-style caper. ... Read more...

Footwear, foreigners rule NYE at Lavo

If I have learned anything from partying on the Strip this New Year’s Eve, it’s this: ladies should quit torturing themselves with ridiculous high heels! Upon first walking into Lavo at the Palazzo at the rather early hour of 9 p.m., one of the first things I saw was a lady on the patio holding her oh-so-stylish yet apparently uncomfortable high-heeled boots in her hands. Will this be the year when women finally abandon their New Year’s resolutions of promising ... Read more...

Fremont appeals to locals, laid-back crowd for NYE

Fancy cocktails that flow freely on the Strip were nowhere to be seen on New Year’s Eve under the Fremont Street Experience’s canopy of lights. Instead, people walked around holding plastic cups shaped as footballs filled to the brim with beer. After some rough economic times this year, the unpretentious atmosphere that downtown offered seemed to be just what those who came to celebrate the new year needed. With a come-as-you-are attitude, some of the thousands who crowded the Fremont ... Read more...

NYE aftermath: the storm and then the calm

In a dark alley between Harrah’s and the Wynn, a school bus waits. Throughout the night, cops lead scrawny teenage hoodlums with cocked hats onto the bus in handcuffs. The black and yellow bus isn’t taking anyone to school; it will haul them away to a detention center at the end of the night. A few yards down is an ambulance, where paramedics attend to a steady stream of stretchers. A few steps more and two boys are pissing in ... Read more...

Passports and partiers storm Perfecto for NYE ‘08

At 8:30 p.m. the line was already snaking past the slot machines, down the hallway, in front of the reception desk by the fortune teller and out towards the blackjack tables. Partiers in their sequined and pin-striped New Year’s best formed a queue that wound from the rope outside of Rain nightclub through the casino to almost reach the Palms’ front door. While Paul Oakenfold’s Saturday night Perfecto party and live show always draws large crowds, the New Year’s Eve ... Read more...

Snow and bingo for New Year’s Eve in Summerlin

Whether they were dressed in their finest outfits or sporting goofy hats and sunglasses, thousands of people across Summerlin rang in the New Year with style on Dec. 31. At 9 p.m. inside the Suncoast Casino, more than 600 guests enjoyed the ninth annual “New Year’s Eve Bingo Night” — an event that typically draws a more “mature” crowd, according to coordinator Lyn Brown. “It’s a pretty big draw each year,” Brown said. “Almost all of them are locals.” At ...
